Twenty years ago, the dead destroyed the world of the living. The survivors scattered in the wake of the Scourge, erecting small towns in the worlds' most sparsely populated areas.

For young Gabriel, the walking dead are merely the memories that haunt the eyes of those old enough and lucky enough to have survived. He is more concerned with his hard life in America's desert, where his chores keep him busy and the husks of books stashed beneath the cellar of the library are his only freedom.

Until the circus comes to town.

"Circus of the Dead" is a novelette of approximately 10,748 words.

You know the old saying, "you get what you pay for"? This is a free book on Amazon for Kindle, so you do the math.

Gabriel is a young man who is looking for some excitement with his friends in a post-apocalyptic zombie world. They live in a very structured society and when the Reverend forbids his parishioners to see a local traveling circus, that just ensures Gabriel and his friends will go.

The ending was one of the worse I've ever read. Here's how I knew it was over--there were no more pages. No denouement, no resolution. Just, the end. Dissatisfying. It wasn't that I hated this book. I just didn't like it. It felt very amateurish and quickly done.

This book reminded me of Darrell Shan's series, Cirque Du Freak. Same exact plot, substituting zombies for vampires. Unlike Cirque Du Freak, this is much too inappropriate for teen readers. It is chock full of foul language and drug references as well as being sexually suggestive and very violent.

I suppose my biggest pet peeve with books like this is that they are so focused on the topic that a focus on good writing goes right out the window. Everyone is rushing to write and read zombie books right now because zombies are 'in'. But, still, there has to be a good effort to make a good story.

Thankfully, it was a very short read. I will not be reading anymore books by this author and will continue the search for a good zombie tale.

Circus of the Dead edition by Seth Blackburn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Seth Blackburn, Circus of the Dead (Seth Blackburn, 2011)

A VERY solid short, this, much better than I was expecting given the usual quality of shorts that have been cast to the wild in the past few months. Some great characters, a vivid and detailed setting, solid pace, and if the ending is a bit predictable (and shows the wears in the fabric where Blackburn is wearing his Jonathan Maberry-loving heart on his sleeve), so what? The blasted, post-undead landscape is convincing (and pretty new), and Blackburn knows how to make it pop. Would love to see this expanded to novel-length, or expanded to be Part One of a novel, or what have you. Very good stuff. *** ½
Circus of the Dead is a "Yeah the zombie apocalypse happened, but that was before my time" type of story, with just a sprinkling of zombies tossed in. It's not the "Eek! There's a zombie" (scream, run, kill it, scream, run, kill it, wash, rinse, repeat) storyline common of most apocalyptic books.

No typos, with well developed characters, environment, sentence structure, and topped off with a great storyline, making it great for a quick read. I would definitely recommend it.
Not at all a bad tale, although it was a little predictable and familiar. I would have liked to know a bit more about the parts skipped, but the writing was good and I did love the descriptions given to everything. I could hear the reverend's speech as I read it, could see the sad acceptance of the father's face, even the horrid visage of the zombie. The ending did feel just a little rushed and unfinished, but the rest was well worth a read through.

Not too bad of a zombie short.
If you want a cheesy, run of the mill zombie splatter fest, this is not for you. This is zombie literature...fantastic writing! It's in the style of King, Laymon, Simmons, McCammon. etc. who actually build characters and describe the setting so well, you are there. This is a perfectly ordinary day that goes bad in a huge way....almost a coming of age message set in horror and unsettling issues. Satisfying to those of us who enjoy a well developed story with FAIRNESS. The end, as well as the rest was fair and excellent IF you are a thinker and understand unwritten meanings within an elegant style. The prose manage to be descriptive without bogging down the action and the character (main) unforgettable. Bittersweet and perfect. Like zombie movies...this is a Romero-style classic and not a splatter fest (tho it does get icky and creepy and is fun!). I feel the mature reader will appreciate this. Five stars.
Parts of this story are beautifully written and I think the author has a lot of potential. It just felt as if once the situation was set up, the author lost interest in the story.

This is the story of a young man growing up in a society recovering from the ravages of a zombie outbreak. Life in his community is stark and focused on survival. There is a sudden break in routine when a travelling circus arrives and he has to decide if he will defy authority and visit the circus. There is a sense of magic in this story and there is beauty in how Blackburn writes. However, the story is fatally undercut by the author's choice to have his main character -- our only narrator -- be unconscious during the main part of the action and then jumping over key details in what feels like a mad rush to end the tale. The strength of the earlier sections makes the end that much more disappointing.
This was an interesting zombie outbreak, in the supposedly safe days aftermath short story. The tale will take you around half an hour or so to read. Although this is a short story, it is a shame it wasn't expanded to be longer, as this, without the couple of pages epilogue style wrap up at the end, could easily have been the first chapters of a novel length tale. Seth Blackburn has written a pretty unique spin on the saturated genre, but at the same time we still follow the age old, what survivors need to fear is their fellow survivors, not really the zombies. I enjoyed this one, it was interesting seeing a teen aged character discover things he'd only seen in books that we take for granted such as electric power, elephants and so forth. The through his eyes observational writing was well done. The only negative I would give is that he gives away a little of what is to come at times, since it's written as a flashback memory tale.

I'd definitely read future stories by this author.
